P2 Revision – AQA Additional Science

Use the revision exercises on BBC Bitesize as there are notes and activities with a few past paper questions as I'm not sure if these students all have the workbook.

 e.g. Suggest that you do the whole radiation section
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_aqa/atoms_radiation/

and then that you do AQA additional science past papers
http://web.aqa.org.uk/qual/newgcses/science/new/add_materials.php?id=03&prev=03
Jan 2009 Q1,5  Jan 2011 Q1 May 2010 Q7

You an then try any other areas of BBC Bitesize and past papers from any year for P2

11B Science
You should use the B2 section for revision of all areas over the holiday for a mock, just after Easter and for final exam.

Use the B2 section of whichever revision guide you have.

A reminder of some of the topics = cell biology, body chemistry, enzymes, genetics, food webs & chains, plants, carbon cycle, diffusion and osmosis.

AQA past papers for any year for B2 can be found by clicking here.

Module = B2 Biology and you are now close to the end of this.  You should use the B2 section of a revision guide (AQA syllabus) to revise thoroughly and identify weaknesses.  There will be a mock exam just after Easter to really help you be prepared for final the exam.

A reminder of some of the topics:

Cell biology including what is in a cell and function of main parts (nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes).  You must know the difference between animal and plant cells and be able to explain how some cells are adapted to their specific function - at least one animal and one plant (sperm and root hair cell);

Osmosis and diffusion of particles in biological systems (transfer into and out of whole organisms, transfer into/out of cells);

Photosynthesis – how light energy is fixed into chemical energy in sugar (also equation); Limiting factors (light, temp, CO2 and minerals for plant health).

Respiration – how chemical energy is released from sugar (equation).  You MUST understand that ALL organisms respire but only plants can PS.

Food chains/webs and how energy transfers through them and is lost at each level.  How this affects efficiency of food production but what this means for animal welfare.

Decay cycles - how dead animals and plants are broken down by microorganism and how this is related to food webs.  How we slow the decay process to help preserve food.

The carbon cycle.

Enzymes as biological catalysts and how they work.  The affects of pH and temperature.  How they help digestion and how we use them in cleaning and food production.

Waste removal - CO2 by lungs and other waste products of body chemistry through the liver and kidneys.

Homeostasis mechanisms (water, sugar, temperature).

Cell division – mitosis for growth and repair, meiosis for production of gametes.

Stem cells – what they are and how we might use them in medicine.

BASIC GENETICS:

Chromosomes, DNA and protein synthesis.

Inheritance – Mendel, gene dominance (importantly how to use Punnett squares to work out how chracteristics from each parent are expressed) and sex inheritance (X & Y chromosomes).

Inherited disorders – focus on cystic fibrosis.

DNA fingerprinting – what is it and how is it used.

The idea after the Easter holiday is that we will do listening papers in lesson time, and go over them and mark. I will set reading papers to be done at home each week, and we will go over them in class.

On the school web-site, there are lots of links with passwords for you to log onto which will give you exam practice too, and more listening practice if you feel this is the skill you feel needs more input.

Also, you can log onto the Edexcel website for lots of past papers too.

Maths
All your 11 students should complete one mymaths booster lesson and homework per day of the holiday.  These are instantly marked and feedback given.  Students should be aiming for at least 80% on every piece.

These can be found at www.mymaths.co.uk and students need to login in using their unique login details.  If these have been forgotten or lost please contact Mrs Maude at emaude@educ.somerset.gov.uk and they will be sent to you.

The booster packs are in 3 sections boosting grades D to C, C to B and Boosting to A/A*.  Students will need to choose the section appropriate to their threshold and current ability.

If you have any queries please contact me on the email address above.
